![]() Who just happens to have a thing for, in his own words, "little girls". ![]() This man is not presented as a villain in any way, if anything he's supposed to be a sweet old man. The creepy old uncle (who has entirely too much screen time for a character that has no real relevance to the plot other than to offer running commentary), has a musical number in the park in which he extols underage girls, while smiling lecherously at a group of girls who couldn't be any more than 8 years old. This is a man whose ex girlfriend either attempts suicide or successfully commits suicide following his dumping of her (I don't remember honestly), and him and his pedophilic uncle laugh and joke about it, with the uncle saying "Congratulations! Your first suicide." What the fuck? These characters are not intended to be despicable, morally bankrupt people, like in, for example, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or even Pulp Fiction, although not even the hit men, drug dealers, and mobsters of Pulp Fiction are pedophiles. This man, who is easily 40 years old, pursues Gigi (our protagonist) as he wants her to be his top escort or whatever, and every time he comes around to ask her on a date or whatever he berates her openly, lampooning her manners, her clothes, and behavior, as he's a rich smug asshole. Her grandma is friends with an elderly rich pedophile who attempts to hook up his equally creepy, rude nephew with the underage protagonist. The girl is supposed to be about 14-15 years old, her age is never outright stated but it's implied to be around that. What in the fuck? This is a film about a innocent teenager from the slums whose grandmother and aunt are training her to become an escort. Anyway, the plot itself is mostly what I wanted to address. Admittedly, the running time is due to the overabundance of songs, all of which are awful and boring, but even without the songs, the plot advances at a snail's pace it is one of the most slow moving films I have ever watched, and I usually love and watch slow moving films such as anything from Ozu, Kieslowski, Antonioni, you get the point. First off, the film is almost two hours long. However, the cinematography is the only thing that wasn't cringeworthy in this film. That being said, I decided to watch Gigi because it won an extraordinary amount of Oscars including Best Picture, and while I know that is no indicator of a film's substance, especially during the time in which it was released, being the film buff that I am I felt like I needed to see it.įirst off, the film has decent cinematography, and there are some great vivid colors in the film, mostly involving people's ornate clothing (the film takes place in 1900 Paris), as well as furniture and decorations. Now and then I'll come across a musical that is genuinely well-made, and is not just fluff and emptiness, Fiddler on the Roof is one of these, but for the most part musicals simply do not impress me. I find them to be silly, preposterous, and 99% of the time, they favor musical numbers, choreography, costume design, and shit like that above plot, acting, dialogue, or themes. First off, let me just say that I am not a fan of musicals.
